About

Tools built by the people using them.

Illuminate Risk makes forensic software. Every tool started as something an engagement needed and nothing on the market did.

Why it exists

Traditional forensic review samples. A reviewer picks a defensible slice of the ledger, tests it thoroughly, and infers the rest, because reading everything by hand was never possible in the time available.

The inference is where things get missed. Fraud is not distributed evenly, and the transactions worth finding are the ones designed not to look interesting. Software can read the whole population in the time a person reads a sample, so it should.

That is the entire premise. Everything else here is about making the output of that defensible enough to put in front of someone who will argue with it.

Three rules the engine follows

Model output is a proposal, not a result

Where a document has to be read by a model, the extraction is checked against the document's own arithmetic before anything is reported. Clean statements never reach a model at all. They go through parsers that are free, instant and reproducible.

Every figure keeps its provenance

A number traces back to the transaction, and the transaction back to the page of the document it came from. That is the difference between a finding that survives cross-examination and a summary that does not.

What is missing is stated before what was found

Coverage is computed first and everything downstream is weighted by it. A spending total built from eight months of a twelve-month window is not a year, and reporting it as one quietly understates the very thing worth looking at.

David Voorhees

Illuminate Risk was founded by David Voorhees, a forensic accountant and former investigator who spent years leading risk functions inside large payments and data companies before going out on his own.

The tools on this site came out of that practice. He still runs engagements, which is the reason the software gets built the way it does. The person specifying it is the person who has to defend the output.

All three open voorheescfe.com.

Software and services are separate

Illuminate Risk builds and licenses the software. Advisory engagements, including investigations, the Business Health Check and diligence support, are delivered by Blue Horizon Group LLC.

That separation matters if you are a firm evaluating the engine, because it is the answer to the obvious question: case data belonging to firms who license the software is never available to the advisory practice, and we will put that in writing.

Questions about how it works?
